Preparing for Travel to Nicaragua during a Pandemic

nicaragua covid entrance requirements

I found my first flight to Nicaragua Wooooo! So now what? After a brief celebration I started to think Nicaragua covid entrance requirements. I Googled “covid entry requirements to Guatemala”, contacted the airline and even called the Guatemalan embassy. I was told that as long as I’m vaccinated (which I am) I’d be good. My next question to the embassy “Does Guatemala accept mixed vaccinations?” Answer yes as long as they are approved by the World Health Organization. So Yes I am good right? Wrong because I’m not going to Guatemala I am heading to Nicaragua! If you didn’t realize that I am a travel the world virgin yet you definitely do now.

What is required as of today for entrance into Nicaragua?

I called the airline back and this time asked about the country I’m actually planning on visiting. To visit Nicaragua you do not need proof of vaccination just a negative PCR covid test taken 72 hours before arrival. Avianca Airlines has an amazing landing page explaining the current Nicaragua covid entrance requirements. I do need to show proof of vaccination leaving Montreal as I will be flying Air Canada for that leg which is now a Canadian law flying within Canada.

72 Hour Window to Manage PCR Test

Given that my flight path includes connecting flights (about 9 hours travel time), 72 hours isn’t a lot of time. I moved my train leaving Toronto from 8:30 am to the 11:37 am train to accommodate the PCR test window in Toronto. Next I need to send the results to Avianca (They also included instructions on the Nicaragua entrance landing page). This needs to happen at least 36 hours before I leave El Salvador for Nicaragua. As long as I can send it in before 3 am on Sunday morning I am good. If the flights stay on time I will have about 12 hours to spare after I land at my final destination.

Send Personal Information to Airline

I have to send my personal information to the airline 36 hours before I arrive. You know passport information, flight number, where I’m staying etc. so it can be reviewed in advance. There is another form that the Nicaraguan government says needs to be filled out one week before arrival. This form seems to overlap the form I send to the airline 36 hours prior to arrival. The Nicaraguan embassy in Canada points me to the airline which has no mention of sending anything one week in advance. But Visit Nicaragua says it needs to be filled out as well. At this point I think I will be safe and do both. Better safe then sorry right?

So that’s it that’s you Nicaragua covid entrance requirements. Do this and you should be ok. Here’s hoping that things change and the PCR test is not required by the time I leave but I’m not counting on it.
