Masaya Volcano a Must See in Nicaragua

Updated April 14th, 2025. When I began planning my trip to Nicaragua, the most common must-see attraction that kept popping up was the Masaya Volcano. So, this was an experience I was determined to have. Nicaragua is a beautiful country with amazing architecture, lush jungles, beaches, vibrant nightlife, and, of course, volcanoes. The country offers everything that the more touristy Costa Rica has, but at a fraction of the cost. Unsurprisingly, my first excursion in Nicaragua was to see the Masaya Volcano at sunset, and it did not disappoint. If you do one thing in Nicaragua, this is it, and make sure you catch the sunset and see the volcano at night. You can book a guided tour for $12, which I booked at my hostel, De Boca en Boca.

I visited Nicaragua for the first time at the peak of the Covid pandemic. See how I prepared by reading my blog Preparing for Travel to Nicaragua During A Pandemic.

Masaya Volcano at First Glance

Once you enter the volcano gates, you can feel the excitement from the other travelers. It isn’t very high, but there is magic to it. We took the bus right up to the volcano, got off, and went straight to the edge. Watching the smoke rise to the top was fascinating, even though we could not see any lava at that point. However, the guide assured us that by the time we returned, we would definitely see it. Don’t miss the chance to take pictures and videos, as I have been told it’s rare to get so close to the edge of a volcano.

My first glance at the volcano was epic.

Hiking to the Mountain Top In Search of Some Killer Views

Next, we began our journey to the top of the mountain from the volcano. It’s a hike, but it’s a fun one. You feel like you’re getting a workout, but it’s very manageable for most people. Once you reach the top, it’s absolutely worth it. You get an epic view of the Masaya Volcano and the beautiful surrounding hills and mountains. When you arrive at the summit, you’re sweaty, catching your breath, look around, and reflect on how worth it the journey was.

Epic Sunset over the Volcano

The sunset from the top is epic and definitely the best I’ve seen in Nicaragua. The sun setting over the mountains above the volcano is indescribable. You have to experience it for yourself. I am sharing pictures, but the Masaya Volcano is one of those places where pictures do not do it justice. Take my word for it: this is a must-see when visiting Nicaragua, especially at sunset. Just fly to Nicaragua and book your own tour.

Masaya Volcano at night. I can now see the lava!

The Masaya volcano at night

As the sun fell at around 6:30 we made the journey down the mountain to hopefully see the lava brewing. And the Volcano did not disappoint. Seeing the bright red lava from the edge of the volcano is a site that I’m not sure any other volcano in the world can bring. It looks scary from the pics and video but it was simply mesmerizing. I took a lot of pics but just wanted to take it in and plant the visual in my head so I never forget. When you come to Nicaragua do not miss this experience.
