When I arrived at my hostel Teva Jungle Hostel in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica I noticed a jungle night tour on the information board. You don’t visit Manuel Antonio without visiting Manuael Antonio national park. But is the national park the best place to see animals? The guy at the information desk at my hostel didn’t think so. He suggested I do the jungle night tour and visit the park on my own assuring me that I will see much more at night. And he wasn’t wrong! It was a 3 hour walk through the jungle at night and it didn’t disappoint. I saw bright frogs, orange lightning beetles, huge spiders, lizards and snakes! Yes snakes the one thing I didn’t want to see but at least not a poisonous snake right? Wrong I did run into one in the jungle in Costa Rica. I’m sharing my encounter with the Fer-de-lance the deadliest snake in Costa Rica.
I Almost Tripped Over Costa Rica’s Deadliest Snake
The guide led the tour and I was first in line after him I even had the snake stick to take snakes down from trees if required. As we walked through the jungle all of the sudden the guide yells “Geoff stop”. There is a poisonous snake. What? Where? He instructed me to walk around a landmark and not to stop until I got to a spot on the other side that he pointed out.
Then I Met The Fer-De-Lance
So I did what I was told even though I still didn’t see a snake. At this point I thought the guide may have been putting us on as he was a character. Regardless I wasn’t going to do anything stupid and walked to the spot he told me to go to. He then took my phone and took a picture of the snake for me which I now could clearly saw. I walked three feet in front of this snake and it’s a damn good thing It wasn’t daylight. In the end my encounter with the Fer-de-lance the deadliest snake in Costa Rica which I didn’t want to happen is a highlight of my trip. Now that’s not something everyone gets to experience when visiting Costa Rica.
For me the sounds of the jungle at night and just being there was worth the price of admission. You can just feel how alive the jungle is at night! To see all the wildlife was just an awesome bonus. But to come across the Fer-de-lance the deadliest and most aggressive snake in Costa Rica made this an unforgettable experience. Knock this off the list of things I only need to experience once in my life.
